On 2 and 3 May, UN Environment will be partnering to launch a Global Initiative to Advance Children’s Right to a Healthy Environment. The initiative will kick off in Bogota, Colombia at a workshop that will bring together 40 experts and 25 children and young people from across Latin America and Caribbean to discuss key environmental issues facing children in the region, and to promote collaboration and tangible solutions to promote children’s rights in the face of these challenges.

It will be the first consultation in a series of regional expert meetings set to take place around the world between now and 2021. As part of the initiative, children and youth from around the world are being invited to participate in an online poll to express their views and concerns on environmental issues, and these will be shared widely with decision-makers in countries, regions and internationally. Based on these inputs, a Global Declaration on Children’s Right to a Healthy Environment will be developed and handed over to world leaders.

The initiative is taking place under the auspices of the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment, in collaboration with Child Rights Connect, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Global Child Forum, Heinrich Boll Foundation, Project Dryad, Terre des Hommes, UNICEF, UN Environment, UNESCO, WWF and others.
